WordPress Google Search Console Ireland — how to set up and use GSC for Irish WordPress sites in 2026

Google Search Console (GSC) is the most important free SEO tool available to Irish WordPress site owners, and it is consistently underused. While most Irish businesses have Google Analytics installed, far fewer have Search Console set up — and Analytics cannot tell you what GSC can. Google Search Console shows you exactly which search queries bring people to your site, which pages Google has indexed, whether your site has crawl errors, and how your pages perform in Irish search results. This guide covers how to set it up on your WordPress site and how to make practical use of the data.

What Google Search Console Does That Analytics Cannot

Google Analytics tracks what visitors do once they are on your site — pages viewed, time spent, conversions. Google Search Console tracks what happens before they arrive — which keywords triggered your pages in search results, how often your pages were shown (impressions), how often they were clicked (clicks), and what your average position was for each query.

GSC also communicates directly from Google to you: if Googlebot cannot crawl a page, if your sitemap has errors, if your site has a manual penalty, or if pages are excluded from the index, Google Search Console tells you. You cannot get this information from Analytics. For any Irish WordPress site with SEO ambitions, both tools are necessary — they answer different questions.

Creating Your Google Search Console Account

Go to search.google.com/search-console and sign in with a Google account. If your Irish business uses Google Workspace (yourname@yourdomain.ie), use that account — it keeps all your Google tools under one business login.

Click “Add property” and choose the URL prefix method — enter your full site URL including https:// (e.g. https://onwebpoint.com). The Domain method is more comprehensive but requires DNS access; the URL prefix method is simpler and sufficient for most Irish WordPress sites. Click Continue.

Verifying Ownership of Your WordPress Site

Google offers several verification methods. The two most practical for WordPress are the HTML tag method and Google Analytics verification.

HTML tag method: Google gives you a meta tag to add to your site’s <head> section. With Rank Math installed, go to Rank Math → General Settings → Webmaster Tools → Google Search Console and paste the verification code there. Rank Math outputs it in the head automatically. With Yoast, go to Yoast → General → Webmaster Tools and paste it in the Google field. Save, then click Verify in Google Search Console.

Google Analytics method: If your site already has the Google Analytics 4 tag installed (via Site Kit, Rank Math, or directly), Google Search Console can verify ownership through the existing Analytics connection. This is the fastest method if GA4 is already set up — follow the guide on setting up Google Analytics 4 on WordPress in Ireland if it is not yet installed.

Submitting Your XML Sitemap

After verification, the first task is submitting your sitemap. A sitemap tells Google exactly which pages exist on your site and helps it discover and index them efficiently.

Rank Math automatically generates a sitemap at yourdomain.ie/sitemap_index.xml. Yoast generates one at yourdomain.ie/sitemap_index.xml also. In Google Search Console, go to Sitemaps in the left menu, enter your sitemap URL, and click Submit. Google will confirm it was read successfully and show how many URLs were discovered.

For Irish WordPress sites using Rank Math, the sitemap includes posts, pages, categories, and any custom post types you have configured. Check the sitemap URL directly in your browser first to confirm it loads correctly before submitting.

Understanding the Key Reports

Performance Report

This is the most valuable report for ongoing SEO work. It shows total clicks, impressions, average click-through rate (CTR), and average position for your site in Google search over any date range.

The most useful view is the Queries tab — the list of search terms that triggered your pages. Filter by a specific page URL to see which queries that page ranks for. This tells you whether a page is ranking for its intended keyword, which related terms it also ranks for, and whether there are keywords driving impressions but few clicks (indicating a title or meta description that needs improving).

For an Irish WordPress site, look specifically at queries containing location terms — “Ireland”, “Cork”, “Dublin”, and so on. These show whether your local SEO is working and which local queries you are appearing for versus missing.

Index Coverage Report

This shows which pages Google has indexed, which are excluded, and why. Common issues on Irish WordPress sites include: pages blocked by robots.txt (often staging site settings left in production), noindex tags applied incorrectly to pages that should rank, and 404 errors from old URLs that have no redirect.

Review the Excluded tab regularly. Pages with “Crawled — currently not indexed” are pages Google has visited but chosen not to index — typically because they have thin content, are near-duplicates of other pages, or have technical issues. This is useful input for a WordPress SEO audit.

Core Web Vitals Report

Google Search Console now includes a Core Web Vitals report that shows real-world performance data for your pages, broken down by mobile and desktop. Pages marked as Poor or Needs Improvement are being penalised in rankings relative to faster competitors. This report integrates directly with the Core Web Vitals fixes guide for Irish sites — it tells you which pages need attention, and the guide tells you how to fix them.

Links Report

Shows which external sites link to your WordPress site and which pages have the most internal links. External links (backlinks) from authoritative Irish sites — local news outlets, industry associations, business directories — carry significant SEO value. The Links report lets you monitor your backlink profile and identify the pages that attract the most external attention.

Using GSC Data to Improve Rankings

The most actionable use of Google Search Console data for Irish WordPress sites is finding pages with high impressions but low CTR. A page appearing 2,000 times per month in search results but with a 1% CTR is generating only 20 clicks. Improving the title tag and meta description — making them more compelling and directly relevant to the query — can lift CTR to 3–5%, tripling clicks with no change in ranking.

In Google Search Console, filter the Performance report by page, then sort by impressions descending. For each high-impression page, check the average CTR. If it is below 3% for informational queries or below 1% for competitive queries, open the page and rewrite the SEO title and meta description. With Rank Math, this is done directly on the post edit screen — update the SEO title and meta description fields and the changes go live immediately.

Connecting Google Search Console to Google Analytics

Linking Google Search Console to Google Analytics 4 brings search query data into the Analytics interface, where you can see the full journey from search query through to on-site behaviour and conversion. In GA4, go to Admin → Property Settings → Search Console links and connect your verified property. The data appears in GA4 under Reports → Acquisition → Search Console.
